Medellín travel tips

The questions our guests ask us most. Answered by us, on the ground since 2011.

Is Medellín safe for tourists?

Yes, with common sense Medellín is very visitable. The city has transformed over the past twenty years, but petty crime such as pickpocketing does happen.

Locals say "no dar papaya": do not offer an opportunity. Keep your phone and jewellery out of sight, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps at night, never leave drinks unattended and be careful with online dates. Check your government's travel advice before you go.

When is the best time to visit Medellín?

You can visit Medellín all year. The city sits at about 1,500 metres and is called the "City of Eternal Spring", with daytime temperatures mostly between 22 and 28 °C.

The drier months are usually December to March and July to August. April, May, October and November bring more rain, mostly as short, heavy afternoon showers. Plan day trips for the morning then.

How far is Guatapé from Medellín, and is it worth it?

Guatapé lies about 80 kilometres east of Medellín, roughly two hours each way by car. Plan a full day for El Peñol, its 740 steps and the colourful village.

It is worth it: the view from El Peñol over the reservoir is one of the best-known views in Colombia. Going privately gets you there before the tour buses and lets you decide how long to stay.

Can you visit a coffee farm near Medellín?

Yes. You do not need to travel hours to the Coffee Region (Eje Cafetero) for a real coffee tour. The organic farm Café Corazón de León in Itagüí is about 20 minutes from Medellín.

You pick coffee yourself, watch the roasting and taste with a barista. The tour takes three hours and fits nicely around an afternoon in the city.

What are the hidden gems around Medellín?

Three trips few tourists know: the abandoned railway near Amagá with tunnels and a wooden bridge, the source of the Río Medellín (La Clara) in the cloud forest, and the mountain village of Angelópolis above 2,000 metres.

Can I get by in Medellín with English?

In hotels and restaurants in El Poblado often yes, outside the tourist districts hardly. In the countryside and villages almost only Spanish is spoken.

A guide who speaks your language opens doors: you can ask questions, talk with locals and understand what you see.

How do I pay in Colombia?

The currency is the Colombian peso (COP). In Medellín, cards are usually accepted in hotels, restaurants and malls, while villages and street stalls need cash.

Withdraw cash from ATMs inside banks or malls rather than free-standing machines on the street.

What do I need to enter Colombia?

Swiss, German and Austrian citizens can enter visa-free as tourists, usually for up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid.

Immigration also requires the online Check-MIG form, completed between 72 hours and one hour before your flight. Rules can change, so please check with Migración Colombia before you travel.

How do I get from the airport to Medellín?

José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) is in Rionegro, outside the city. The drive to Medellín takes 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.
